Savoring Small Winery Tasting Experiences In The Napa Valley

Most Napa Valley visitors have heard of Robert Mondavi wines, Sutter Home and Beringer. You can buy and enjoy their wines in most U.S. grocery stores and wine shops.

But, most visitors have never heard of Elk Horn Peak, Hagafen, Miller, Madrigal or Stelzner (to name just a few...).

There's more than 350 wineries in the 38 mile long Napa Valley and only a few dozen are widely known. That doesn't mean they are the best. Sure, they make good wine, but so do many of the really small wineries.

Small and boutique wineries are real "hands on" operations. They are fun, friendly and have tons of character.

Some, like Elk Horn Peak are really laid back and built into an old barn. Ken makes an outstanding Pinot Noir.

Others, like Cosentino, have a tasting room right on Highway 29. If you like Zinfandel, their's is terrific.

The magic of small wineries and vineyards is the character and individuality they provide the Napa Valley visitor.

One company, Vintners Collective, was formed to be a collective of wines from wine makers who all scored 90+ in Wine Spectator, but were too small to have their own tasting room. So, in one place, you can sample an incredible collection of fantastic wines by wine makers dedicated to the art of fine wine.

Small wineries and vineyards can give you a level of customer service and attention you may not receive at larger wineries. And, small wineries can't afford to have an attitude either. Their friendly attitude is genuine and fun. Goosecross and Stelzner are great examples of this. And their are tons more, too.

Often small and boutique wines are priced reasonably and provide a great value for the incredible quality you receive. The value of a wine isn't the price, it is what tastes good to you. Inexpensive wines can be just as good or better than expensive wines. I remember doing a blind tasting of Chardonnays a few years ago and out of 6 wines the most expensive wine came in last place when scored by the entire group.

Some of these small wineries, like Bouchaine and V. Sattui, have picnic tables and can even offer food, appetizers and nibbles to go with a bottle of their fine wine (food and wine at additional cost).

While many of these small and boutique wineries will sell you wine through the Internet, you don't have an easy way to find out which ones you like the best...unless you go their.

So, the next time you visit the Napa Valley to taste wines, try small wineries and vineyards. They'll make the experience an enjoyable and memorable one. And you can have wines shipped to your home or business to share with family and friends.

Today's Vintage Charts Article

An Overview of Wine - The Drink of Gods

Wine has been called the drink of the gods. This may be debatable, but it has definitely been the drink of the ages. Here is an overview of wine you can sip on.

An Overview of Wine - The Drink of Gods

Wine is one of the oldest drinks known to mankind. Although historians may not be entirely sure that this is how the fermentation of wine started, an overview of the history of wine is full of interesting tidbits.

Made of fermented grape juice, wine is an alcoholic beverage that is both made and drunk in many parts of the world. The history of wine starts over 5000 years ago. It was said to have been discovered when grapes were left for too long in amphorae or earthenware jugs. These grapes somehow became tainted with wild yeast, which caused the grapes to ferment. Some courageous individual took a drink and realized the fermentation process had produced something that would be come known as wine.

There are several different basic types of wine. The most basic breakdown is red wine and white wine. When the grapes that make these varieties of wine are combined, a rose or blush wine can be created. If the wine is allowed to ferment in a way that produces carbon dioxide bubbles, it becomes a sparkling wine. If the sparkling wine comes from a particular region in France called Champagne, it is known as Champagne. There are also fortified wines - these wines are also fermented from grapes, but additional amounts of alcohol from other sources are added to the wine to raise its alcohol content. An example of a fortified wine is brandy.

Making wine is not an easy process - the fermentation of a really good wine may take years or even decades to complete. The type of oak barrel that wine is typically fermented in is also the result of a difficult process. Out of the 400 species of oak that grow on Earth, only 20 species are used in oak barrels for winemaking. Of those 20 species, only 5 percent of the wood taken from these trees is deemed good enough to be made into wine barrels.

The amount of grapes needed to produce quality wine is another of the many mind boggling wine tidbits known. Generally, it takes four clusters or 300 grapes to produce just one bottle of wine. Since there are only about 40 clusters of grapes produced on a grapevine per year, this means that each vine is only capable of making 10 bottles of wine. Given this fact, it is pretty amazing that wine is as cheap as we find it.

As you can see, wine is a not a simple fermentation process. The next time you drink a glass of your favorite chardonnay, think about the difficult journey that it made from grape to bottle.

Wines To Keep You Warm And Fuzzy

Ever wondered what the best wines were to go with the food that helps keep you warm? Even during Summer, a brisk rainstorm can bring about a sudden chill to the air. And we all know Winter can be a chilling experience. For this article, how to keep warm is the question at large. Inquiring minds want to know. Well, the answer may vary from person to person, but the following wines may help dispel that unpleasant chill that seeps through our bones and minds. Read on.

With the change of seasons comes an alteration in what we eat and drink as well. In colder times, most of us seek heartier foods like stews, heavy soups and pastas to stoke our body temperatures and placate our yins and yangs. The perfect wine for any season is not decided so much by its characteristics, but rather by how well those characteristics match the foods associated with the particular time of year.

According to Steve Fox of Richmond Publication, the wines of Northern and Central Italy offer many fine choices for the season. Soave from the Veneto, Tuscany's Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Gavi from the Piemonte are whites that go perfectly with stews and roasts and such.

At one time, these wines, which are made from ancient grape varieties, were available only from one major supplier, Mastroberadino, and were very expensive. Although Mastroberadino remains the region's major supplier, other producers have developed less expensive and equally delicious facsimiles. These include The Greco di Tufu Serapis 2000 by Montesole and The Flano di Avellino 2000 by Marianna, both of which sell for about $15.00. Both of these wines are dry and crisp, the former delivering a flavor of apple and almond, and the latter one of pears and hazelnut.

If you prefer red wines, especially while eating poultry, rabbit or tomato-tart dishes, Barberas and Chiantis have good acidity and are excellent choices. Fruity, spicy Zinfandel (The Burton Napa Valley 2000, which costs about $18 bucks) also ranks high as a companion to most red meat selections.

So sit by the fire and relax with a glass of your favorite wine. Look out the window and feel sorry for anyone still out there struggling through the wet and cold. Whether you prefer white or red, remember that the important thing is to stay warm. Like the words of that old song, "baby, it's cold outside!"
